On June 28, 2013, Reno resident, Ellie Lopez-Bowlan, who was attending the 2013 Reno Rodeo, in Reno, Nevada, witnessed something that has shaken her life.  She saw one of the rodeo horses being tortured by men who were hitting him, pinching him, and using small electrical prods on his abdomen. The most revolting act was the use of a long wire that was shoved into his anus and this was followed by a very long yellow electric prod.  The horse was shocked with the yellow prod, yelled, and bucked violently.

Mrs. Lopez-Bowlan reached out to SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and shared her story and video with us. SHARK is now attempting to help her find this horse so she can rescue him from a life full of abuse and torture.

Complaints Filed Against Veterinarian of Record for the California Rodeo Salinas

Conflict of interest cited as motivating factor for false reporting/non-treatment of injured animals

Watch the video showing the injured animals at the 2013 rodeo here:

SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) today filed two complaints with the Veterinary Medical Board of California against Tim Eastman, the veterinarian of record for the California Rodeo Salinas. The first complaint deals with his underreporting of the number of injured animals, while the second deals with his lack of care for those same injured animals.

In his report of injuries that is mandated by state law, Eastman stated that only three animals were injured.  SHARK, however, video-documented twenty-three animals that had been injured during the rodeo. A video showing each of these injured animals has been published on YouTube.

In 2012, SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK), an Illinois-based animal protection organization, video-documented cruel acts of "horse tripping" (where rodeo riders rope horses around their legs, which brings them crashing to the ground) at the Big Loop Rodeo in Jordan Valley, Oregon. The video of this animal abuse went viral, with more than 200,000 views, and it sparked a movement in the Oregon legislature to ban horse tripping. You can watch that video here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmp8pkbU03I

On May 18, 2013, when SHARK went to this year's Big Loop Rodeo, the Malheur County Sheriff's Department, which has financial and personal ties to the rodeo, violently arrested a SHARK investigator whose only crime was videotaping a cruel event that many Oregon lawmakers were trying to ban (the law subsequently passed and will take effect January 1, 2014).

Harney County Horse Tripping Exposed on YouTube

August 7, 2013

Viewers Worldwide Express Anger, Disgust

A new YouTube video looks like it will go viral, with more than 2200 views in four days.

The disturbing video can be viewed here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlqH7uBJF68

The video was shot at a July 13, 2013 horse tripping event held at the Harney County Fairgrounds in Burns, Oregon. A team of documenters from SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) showed up, and was told that no video or cameras with detachable lenses would be allowed.

Undaunted, the SHARK team entered the event, and immediately discovered both detachable lenses and video cameras being used by people in the stands. When rodeo officials were advised of the supposedly banned devices, they chose to do nothing to rodeo supporters, while continuing to warn SHARK investigators against the same devices.

Having exposed rodeo lies regarding cameras, the SHARK team left the fairgrounds to set up two Hi-Pods next to the public road. The Hi-Pod allows investigators to raise their video cameras thirty feet into the air. In spite of rodeo people’s attempt to place horse trailers in the way to block their activities from the world, the cameras peered right over them, and documented the obvious abuse.
