Slaughtering animals for fun, often in the name of charity, is a distinctly odd enterprise - so much so that Pennsylvania is the only state that continues to allow it.
A 1999 court ruling held that animal cruelty charges could be brought against participants in the Hegins Pigeon Shoot in Schuylkill County. Organizers of that annual slaughter terminated that particular event, but others still occur. One was scheduled a few years ago in Covington Twp., but was canceled amid public opposition.
